Pearl River Piano Group Origins

In 1956, the Guangzhou Piano Factory had only six piano shops and one hundred employees, and its main business was repairing and rebuilding pianos for a very small market. After many attempts, Guangzhou technicians were finally satisfied with the tone color and quality of its first manufactured pianos, and in a short time they were sold in Hong Kong. It would then be twenty years longer before the factory was able to prove its potential, with economic development opening both domestic and foreign markets to Pearl River Pianos.

Our piano cabinets are among the finest, and due vast native forests, Pearl River is able to select its own raw materials from start to finish. Spruce, pine, maple and Chinese walnut are carefully processed in the company’s own lumber yards and then dried in state-of-the-art, computer controlled kilns. Pearl River's climate controlled factories assure uniform conditions throughout the building process.

The iron frame or "plate" is cast from the highest quality pig iron to assure a lifetime of support for the instrument. Engineers have painstakingly analyzed this critical element of the pianos to ensure their stability. The golden lacquer finish is the finest in the industry, and tuning pin holes are precisely drilled by digital boring machines to guarantee the utmost accuracy.

The soundboard of the Pearl River piano is of extraordinary design. Made from the finest straight-grain spruce, the soundboards, the soul of the piano, produce an exceptional quality tone. The solid clear grain ribs extend to the outer rim to add strength and to withstand the stress created by the tension of the strings.

The bridges are made of laminated maple which are precisely located to assure the longest possible string "speaking length" and to help produce a superior tone.

Specially designed fixtures during manufacturing dictate the perfect sweet spot for the uniform and repeatable tone of every Pearl River piano.

Tuning stability is a direct result of the pin block. Fine blue steel, chromium plated, thread cut tuning pins are held in place by 17-ply (upright) or 21-ply (grand) pin blocks, and these are made of the finest hand-selected hard maple.

Pearl River pianos are available in cabinet designs that meet every taste. Whether classical, modern, European or traditional in style, there is a Pearl River designed to suit every taste. Special care is given to selecting only the very finest veneer in clear, interesting patterns, that produce finishes from the natural charm of satin to the flawless high gloss polyester of the modern day.

The Pearl River-designed and produced piano actions are among the world's finest piano components. The action of today's pianos must have the ability to interpret the slightest movement of the performer. Pearl River's sophisticated actions are weighted and balanced to ensure the highest sensitivity, touch and playability.

Hammer production is a most critical area of piano building. To assure uniform production quality, Pearl River controls every aspect of hammer manufacturing. We purchase the very best quality felt from both Japan and Germany. Selected weights for uprights and grands are used to enhance the tone, also pressing, shaping and sanding the hammers guarantees the correct rigidity.

Pearl River pianos are tuned a minimum of 7 times during production. This ensures that tuning stability is at its highest with the first experience of a new Pearl River Piano. The last tuning is performed just before boxing by the most experienced tuner/technicians.

Tips for Buying a Piano

What is a piano, really? Is it a fine piece of handcrafted furniture with a marvelous musical instrument inside? Or is it a highly sophisticated mechanical marvel that creates some of the finest known musical tones packaged in fine furniture? It is actually both.

As one enters into the piano market either as a first time buyer or as a piano owner ready to upgrade, there are a few important things one should know as one prepares to make an informed decision. Some basic knowledge about piano design, construction, the manufacturer's reputation, post-purchase support, and clear personal purchase goals will help clarify one’s decision and make the investment in a piano one that will please you and your family for decades to come.

With proper selection, care, environment and handing, a quality piano will last through three or more generations of enjoyment. A piano purchase should be approached with the knowledge that it will create a legacy because it just may be in the family for 100 years! Below are some things to consider when buying a piano:

  • Piano Design: To make an investment in a piano, a buyer must see clear value reflected in its design. A piano is much more than wood, wire, steel, glue and a little rubber and plastic quickly assembled together. Achieving the finest sound, ideal response, quality appearance, product consistency, and many years of enjoyment by the user is no easy task. Demanding buyers should expect today's piano manufacturer to research, identify, select, and properly prepare the finest materials from around the world. The ideal piano is an idyllic hybrid instrument at an affordable price.

  • Piano Construction: Try to assure that your piano is built using the finest methods of piano building and production. Experts will tell you the best source of high quality pianos is a company having the benefit of many years experience, blending old-world craftsmanship with advanced manufacturing technology and techniques. Your piano supplier should be candid about how it utilizes and improves on the best known techniques, processes, materials and components from around the world to create its final product.

  • The Manufacturer's Reputation: The reputation and responsiveness of a piano supplier must be world class. The quality and desirability of any piano line can often be gauged by those who endorse it and the strength with which the manufacturer stands behind the product. Some of the finest players in the world select a particular brand of piano because it reflects the quality, sound and reputation they wish to present to their audience. Also, reputable technicians know which pianos are designed, built and supported properly. This is reflected in the instrument's tuning stability, the responsiveness and quietness of its action, the consistency and precision of its components, and the post-purchase support experiences of current owners.

  • The Piano's Sound and Feel: The search for a piano can be an arduous one, but when one finds the right piano for oneself, it is something known at once. When you bring it home, your piano will create a "playing pleasure continuum" in that the more one enjoys the look, the sound, and the action of the piano, the more it will be played. Similarly, the more it is played, the more one gains enjoyment.

  • Personal Goals: Before entering the piano showroom, one should have a pretty clear picture of the role the new piano will play in one’s life. Yet one should be flexible enough to consider the long-term benefits that purchasing a quality instrument will bring. Like any other purchase, the final selection of a piano ultimately depends on the intended use of the instrument and your expectations as an owner. This includes such factors as the degree of playing proficiency, the amount of space available, your furniture style preference, your budget and financing goals, and perhaps other goals that will factor into one’s decision.
